What Does it Mean to Tune a Piano?
There are around 250 wires or "strings" that have different amounts of tension on them. When the strings are struck by the hammer action, they produce a sound that has a certain pitch or tone. The different climate conditions effect the tuning stability during the year.
Your piano keys have 1 to 3 strings that vibrate when played. These strings need to be adjusted or "tuned" every 6 months to 1 year for proper "in home maintenance". This ensures that the piano sounds like it's supposed to and that other musical instruments or recordings can be played with the piano.

Why should I have my piano tuned?
It depends on several factors. A piano is designed to sound the best when tuned at the proper pitch level which is (A-440). Neglecting to tune a piano for very long makes it harder to bring the tension on the wires back to the proper pitch. Additional tunings will be required a few months later for insuring the tuning stability that is needed for finishing the tuning job. Additional action or sticky key problems might also be found when the piano is being tuned for the client.

How often should my piano be tuned?
If your piano is 20+ years old, twice a year will suffice for most pianos in order to maintain their pitch properly. For the musician that has a good ear, additional tunings are more likely to occur than the average person will have done. Climate changes of humidity and temperature from season to season are the biggest cause of tuning instability!

Why do some pianos stay in tune longer than others?

New pianos bought will need additional frequent tunings as the strings are still stretching from the factory. If a piano is situated in a stable controlled environment (no drafts, hot air vents, open windows or direct sun) it may remain in tune for longer periods of time. However, still remain on your pianos yearly tuning schedule!

What about hot air vents or outside walls?
Only place your piano in a location that you won't ruin it! The drying heat of an air vent will eventually crack the soundboard, dry out the pin block, and cause the action parts to become loose not to mention the tuning instability it will cause. In climates with many changes and homes without much insulation, it's better not to put your piano on an outside wall or over a hot air vent!

Optional Dampp-Chaser Systems Available
Climate Dampp-Chaser Control systems are available for extending the life of your piano in the Northern Illinois area. Prices range from $200-$475 depending on type of piano installation!
With a Dampp-Chaser Climate Control System installed (out-of-sight in your piano) you will immediately notice greater tuning stability. The piano will sound the way it was meant to day after day. Major Piano manufacturers agree on the benefits of the Dampp-Chaser!
